All About My Trip!

About the school:
Today we arrived at Hushan Elementry School, the school did not look so bad, but you can tell people here are poor. The location was very pretty; there is this very beautiful lake beside the school. This is what the school looks like.

The first thing we did when we got there was to introduce ourselves to the principal and two classes. The two classes we were introduced to were sixth graders, they all seemed shy and different, not like us. The principal lead us up to this big and empty room, the principal said that it would be a beautiful looking library after we start painting the walls and putting wooden floors in, and that’s what we did.  Everybody set off to work as soon as we arrived, we started wrapping books, and the parents and teachers were all building shelves.

After all the hard work, we stopped to have a break, everything was fine, but there was this class whose teacher came late and did not show up, so WE had to teach them. It was so fun! We taught them three letter words: sun, dog, sit…

The next day...
There was this girl who took a picture with me and she invited us to see what her house was like and what they ate. I saw where she lived, I felt sorry for her. I also learned what she eats, which disgusted me, rabbits, bugs, squirrels, and most of all DOGS!

Wonderful library:
The library was new, cozy, warm and well decorated! It had very interesting books: Dr.Suess, I spy, and mostly Chinese books. After taking a lot of pictures with the library, we showed our talents: violin, poems, and a lot more. We gave each other presents, I got a handmade tank from this nice girl, thats why I gave her two pretty pencils and an eraser and then we read together and had a fabulous time.

At Hushan Elementary School I made lots of friends. They are all friendly and respectful. On the first day I wrapped books nicely with my friends. After wrapping the books we went all around the school and my new friends told me about their school.

The next morning the girls kept wrapping the books. The local students helped us to wrap the books. After that busy time we ate lunch. The lunch was so yummy, we were so surprised! The school students came to us with their school books open and a notebook. DO you know why? For signatures! That’s because it was the first time that they had seen foreigners. We made an enormous book tree.

On the last day we had a concert. We sang our school song and also I played the violin. After the concert we shared our presents. I got 2 presents. They were from a student who played a song and read books with me. I was glad I got to help them and I make friends.

The Trip to Build a Library

It’s Wednesday morning and we’re all ready to go on our exciting trip to Hushan Elementary School! I’m so excited! Just riding the bus took us 6 hours. Without noticing we had arrived and I’m ready to do some work!

After introducing ourselves, we started wrapping books and making new friends. The children there were so kind. They gathered around us and asked us if we wanted to play with them. One of the children there started asking for our signature as if we were famous! It is fun signing but I had never written so fast before! The time went by too quickly, it was time for dinner. Looking at the blank room that was supposed to be the library… I was worried.

The next day was even busier, we started putting together shelves and chairs. Some local kids were still wrapping books and the library was almost done! Lastly we put a paper tree at the back of the library. We designed the tree and drew many book covers of good books that we had read and stuck them on the tree. Within seconds the tree came alive! Then one of the teachers took us in to the mountain to visit the home of some children. Wow, it’s really something you can’t find in a city like Shanghai! You could see farms, flowers, bamboo and all the other green plants that you can never find.

After another hour of working the blank room had turned into a wonderful library full of books and decorations!

Library Building!

I was at school very early! On the first day of our trip to Hushan elementary school, me and my aunt had little bags and some supplies but some people had suitcases! Finally we arrived at the school. When we went in we saw a kindergarten with a playground and it looked pretty nice. When we went into the school it was very different! The playground was made out of sand and some of the building was a little bit broken on the outside. We started looking around the school. The library was an empty room but the workers had already started painting and working on the floor. When we had finished looking around, we went to wrap books. Finally, we had dinner at the school.

The next day we were chased by a bunch of students and we made chairs, tables, bookshelves and more. When it was their break time all of the students were wondering what we were doing.

The last day arrived and we had to put all of the things we had made into the library. We had lots of performances like reading, storytelling and Sally and I played the violin.

On Mar 15th we set off to Hushan Elementary School to help build a library. After a 7 hour long bus trip, we finally got there.

For three whole days we worked, we wrapped books, made shelves, tables and chairs. We designed a tree with books growing out of it. We sorted the books into piles, and we turned a dusty room into a pleasant library.

After our hard work, on the third day, that school got a library that they had longed to have.

My Visit To Hushan Elementary School

Janet Hu

In March I applied to be a volunteer for the ‘Build a Library’ project and was luckily chosen to join the trip with other students and some teachers from SUIS. We helped Hushan Elementary School develop a library through the Pass the Love Charity. It was a memorable experience for me.

There were many ‘first time’ events for me on the trip. It was the first time I had seen a school and students in the country area. The students were very curious to see us, but they were very nice. I first made book covers, painted walls, helped install bookshelves and chairs. In addition, it was the first time I had seen pigs, cows and new born chickens. I was very impressed that the chickens and dogs ran wildly in the village.

There are many differences between our lives and the life of the student in the country. In school, they have a huge playground with sand, not much equipment, no running path compared with our playground. In their classrooms there are only walls and blackboards, while we have projectors, books, printers, many posters and our own research information. The house one student lived in; the bathroom was not inside the building. There was only a little bit of furniture, doors couldn’t be locked and they raised dogs for food! However, students were very happy living in the village.

‘Build a Library Trip’ was meaningful to me. Books are important to students. I am happy to be part of the project and experience the country life. I hope to have other chances to help other students in the future.

Wednesday 13th March 2013
This morning I woke up early to go on the library building project. I was on the same bus as Ms. Gemma and Emma. On the way there, I saw 5 tunnels, lots of trees, rivers, mountains, rows of tea plants and bamboo. It took 6 hours to get to the school! We past lots of little cities until at last we were there! I got off the bus, went up the stairs and looked at the school. The school looked small and had some new buildings and some old buildings. We met the grade 6 students. When I first met them, they were so excited because they had never seen a guest. They followed me around and asked me to play with them. We played for a while and wrapped some books. Then we had dinner and got back on the bus. I had a really nice day.

Thursday 14th March 2013

This morning we went to the school at 7:30am! When we had almost reached the school we got stuck in a market so we got off the bus and started walking to the school. When we got to the school I started building a chair with Emma’s mum. It was a bit hard! Then my mum told me to build a table. I built 3 tables. Then we planned a tree wall decoration and cut out the lines. We made covers of books and lots of kids wanted my signature. Today the library has been painted and the curtains have been hung and we brought the chairs and tables up. Finally, everybody put the books on the book shelf. The tree has an open book at the bottom, a big brown trunk, yellow and green leaves, a bird house and book covers hanging on the leaves. I was so proud when I looked at this nice tree. This giving tree will remind the local students of the love and the books that SUIS students gave them. I am sure that the local students are very excited seeing the library and all the books. Then all of us went to a local village, the villagers were very friendly and welcoming to us. One even gave us some oranges. It was a long walk but we were happy to learn and see how they live.

Friday 15th March 2013

This morning we went to the school and did a performance. The local students played instruments, presented a friendship poem and sang a song. Ye Guo and Sally played the violin. Xixi did a story telling. Janet gave her own 3 books to Hushan School and then all of us sang the SUIS school song. The SUIS students then read books with the Hushan school students. My reading buddy was called He Bing. We read a picture book. We exchanged some gifts as well. I got a box with a car pen, some candies and a rock. Then it was time to say goodbye.

A School Trip to Build the Library
Rachel Yu

On Wednesday morning we first had to meet in Ms. Rachael’s class, then we went to the bus and started going. When we were almost there, we passed through many tunnels. When we got to the school we started working. We first learned how to wrap the books and we also needed to find children to teach us how to wrap the books. Those girls were very, very friendly to me and others. The girls asked me if I wanted to play with them so I said ok. At last we ate our dinner in the school. The headmaster of the school said that we should try the food and we all said it was very yummy.

The next day…

In the morning we first ate breakfast at the hotel and then we went to the school and fist wrapped books with Janet. Then we made a poster. It is like an open book. Then we played a game, it was very, very fun! Then we ate our lunch at the school. We then put books on the book shelves. At last, we visited some of the kids’ homes. Then we went to eat dinner, we had some fish and meat and also some vegetables.

The last day…

On Friday morning, we first ate our breakfast at the hotel.  Then we went to the school to prepare a show and also they will prepare a show for us.  One of the shows was two girls singing a song about friends and the song was very, very nice.  At last, when we were almost ready to go, we gave presents to the kids and they gave us presents too! They were very, very nice to all of us.  We also took some pictures of us reading with those kids.  At the end we all said goodbye, see you next time if we can!
